 Acoustics Today
A Publication of the Acoustical Society of America
 Volume 1, Issue 1 October 2005
Cover: The deployment of a moored vertical line array (VLA) receiver begins with the launching of a subsurface float (marked “Research Buoy”) aboard the Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s R/V Melville. The VLA is one of five that were deployed in a sparse billboard array for the 1998–1999 North Pacific Acoustic Laboratory (NPAL) experiment. Three pop-up buoys in yellow plastic hard-hats are mounted on top of the subsurface float for mid-experiment data retrieval. From left to right are shown Peter Worcester (Scripps Institution of Oceanography), Robert Spindel (Applied Physics Laboratory, University of Washington), and Walter Munk (Scripps Institution of Oceanography).
