 Acoustics Today
A Publication of the Acoustical Society of America
 Volume 2, Issue 2 April 2006
Cover: Studies of the atmosphere in the second half of the 19th century led to a revolution in the understanding of sound. Aeronauts in balloons measured temperature and wind variations while sci- entists on the ground reasoned that these variations would cause the path of a sound wave to curve. The science of the lower atmosphere led to a better understanding of sound; this new understanding of the behavior of sound then led to advances in the science of the stratosphere and beyond.
