    Structural Acoustician
Enjoy working in the best of two worlds at the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University
Do you like solving practical, challenging noise and vibration problems, but would also like to work in a University environment? If so, the Applied Research Laboratory’s (ARL) Structural Acoustics Department is the place for you.
In the Structural Acoustics Department, we are a select group of engineers and scientists who help the U.S. Navy and industry reduce vibration and noise in submarines, surface ships, aircraft, turbomachinery and nuclear power plants. We develop and apply state-of-the-art computational and experimental techniques to solve the toughest noise and vibration problems facing our customers. Many of us teach classes in acoustics and vibration in Penn State’s Engineering and Acoustics programs, as well as advise graduate students. Some of us also pursue PhD degrees while working at ARL.
We are looking to employ a structural acoustician faculty person that will help us meet our growing commitments. The responsibilities include: Conducting structural acoustic measurements and numerical/analytical simulations
for Navy and industrial sponsors; composing technical reports summarizing measurements and simulations; and presenting work periodically to sponsors.
Faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience. A Master’s degree is required (but a
PhD is preferred) in Acoustics, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. The following experience is preferred: Predictions and/or measurements of vibration and acoustic behavior; finite element and boundary element analysis; data acquisition and digital signal processing; experimental model analysis; and MATLAB. This is a one-year, fixed- term renewable appointment. Since we work on many U.S. government projects, YOU MUST BE A U.S. CITIZEN TO APPLY, and you’ll be expected to hold a security clearance once you’re hired.
Electronically apply to Job #: A-34473 at arl-jobs@psu.edu. PLEASE INSERT JOB NUMBER IN SUBJECT LINE. Applications will be accepted until position is filled. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION about the Applied Research Laboratory or current position vacancies, visit our web site at www.arl.psu.edu.
The Pennsylvania State University/Applied Research Laboratory offers an exceptional benefits package, including a 75% tuition discount for employees, their spouse or domestic partner and eligible dependents.
Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity and the diversity of its workforce.
