This is my last column as ASA President and I would like to use this space to answer the ques- tion I have been asked most of- ten during my term, “How can I get involved in ASA?” Listed
below are some of the many opportunities available to you as an ASA member (refer to http://acousticalsociety.org/ for full details). If you are not a member, apply for membership so that you can join us in these activities.
Make the Most of Your
AsA Membership
• Upgrade your membership to Full Member as soon as you
are eligible
• Encourage your students and colleagues to become ASA
members
• Apply for an ASA-sponsored fellowship
• Nominate a colleague to become an ASA Fellow
• Nominate a colleague for an ASA prize or award
• Advertise your company/organization in Acoustics Today
and the Meeting Program
• Apply for your company/organization to become a Sus-
taining Member of ASA
• Bring a new idea to the ASA leadership
• Donate to the Acoustical Society Foundation Fund
• Keep your membership current!
AsA Committees
• ASA Technical Committees. Attend meetings of the 13 technical committees that take place on Tuesday, Wednes- day, and Thursday evenings at semiannual ASA meetings. At these open meetings, learn about the activities of the technical committees in your area of acoustics, propose a special session for a future ASA meeting, suggest changes, and offer new ideas. • ASA Administrative Committees. More than 20 admin- istrative committees (http://goo.gl/WkWXIS) meet in per- son and electronically throughout the year to conduct the business of the Society. They serve the Society’s mission
and focus on providing opportunities for ASA members to meet and network, publish and archive, advocate and educate, and honor and recognize. ASA members are in- vited to contact committee chairs if they have suggestions for topics relevant to their committees or are interested in serving as a member.
AsA Publications and standards
• Publish your research in an ASA journal
• Agree to review a manuscript for JASA or JASA-EL when
invited
• Volunteer to organize a special issue in JASA
• Suggest a topic for an article or feature in Acoustics Today • Participate in the ASA Standards Program as an indi-
vidual expert to an Accredited Standards Committee or
Technical Advisory Group
• Download 5 free American National Standards each year
from the ASA Standards Store
• Suggest a topic for a new standard on acoustics or vibration
AsA Regional Chapters
and student Chapters
• Attend meetings of chapters in your area and become
involved in their activities
• Visit schools in your area to talk about acoustics and pro-
vide teachers with acoustics activity kits
• Organize a new chapter in your area or at your school
AsA Meetings
• Attend the semiannual ASA meeting and present your research
• Sponsor a student to attend a meeting
• Invite a colleague in a related areas of acoustics to attend a
meeting and join ASA
• Submit your paper (or your student’s paper) for a student
award competition
• Volunteer to be a judge for a student paper award competition • Organize a special session at a future ASA meeting
• Assist with educational outreach activities during the meeting • Participate in Students Meet Members for Lunch
• Rent a booth for your company/organization in the meet-
ing Exhibit Hall
• Consider organizing an ASA meeting in your city
