On behalf of the Student Council, I am reporting on the ac- tivities of the ASA students at the 169th meeting of the ASA. The meeting in Pittsburgh featured many excellent and well- attended student activities. About 70 students came to the Student Orientation Session, many of whom were attending their first meeting. Monday’s Meet and Greet attracted more than 100 students. Wednesday’s Student Reception was equally successful, and we thank the National Council of Acoustical Consultants for helping make the event possible!
At the reception on Wednesday, we handed out the Student Council Mentoring Award, presenting it to Professor Lily Wang from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Two of her former students, Michelle Vigeant and Lauren Ronsse, gave heartfelt testimony describing how much Dr. Wang meant
to each of them as a mentor both academically and in other facets of life. It was truly an honor to give the award, and we look forward to presenting the award to a new recipient in Honolulu. A call for nominations will be sent out in the near future for the next award.
Student and Young Presenter Paper Awards will be given out to members of the AO, AB, AA, BA, EA, MU, NS, SP, SC, SA, and UW Technical Committees for their papers presented at the Pittsburgh meeting. More information can be found at the ASA student Web site ( http://asastudentcouncil.org ). Congratulations to the winners!
At the 167th ASA meeting in Providence, the Student Coun- cil gave out stickers to attendees that were color coordinated to each TC so that they could meet and get to know people from their TC. This was a great icebreaker and was contin- ued at the Indianapolis and Pittsburgh meetings. We plan to continue the tradition at future meetings, so look for your TC’s sticker color and feel free to stop by your student coun- cil representative to get a sticker!
At the 170th meeting of the ASA in Jacksonville, the Student Council will be organizing a special session for a Grant and Fellowship Panel. Several distinguished speakers will discuss what it takes to get funding from various institutes and orga- nizations. This will be a must-attend event for students who are looking to make the next step into graduate studies and anybody interested in grant proposals and fellowship appli- cations.
As always, we encourage all undergraduates, graduate stu- dents, and new postdocs to come to all of our student events, including the Orientation and Meet and Greet on Monday, the Wednesday social and ASA Jam, and the student out- ings. It’s a great way to meet fellow students and learn about their research while having a great time! For all the latest in- formation, follow the Student Council on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/ASAStudents ) and Twitter ( https://twitter.com/ASAStudents ).
See you in Jacksonville!
