Irina Shport is an associate professor of English at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. She received her PhD
in linguistics from the University of Oregon, Eugene, while investigating prosodic learning in Japanese (her disserta- tion) and English (with Melissa Redford) and tonogenesis in Nahuatl (with Susan Guion). She has worked in several fields of acoustic phonetics including psychoacoustics and socio- acoustics. She served as a guest editor of the special issue of The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America devoted to Southern American English (with Wendy Herd), and her current research is focused on socially meaningful speech variation in the Southern United States.

Wendy Herd was an associate professor
of English at Mississippi State University (MSU; Starkville), with research interests in phonetics, psy- cholinguistics, and second language acquisition. She received her PhD in linguistics from the University of Kansas, Law-
rence, while investigating acoustics and the perception of consonants in English and emphasis in Arabic (with Allard Jongman and Joan Sereno). At MSU, she established the Lin- guistics Research Laboratory, engaging students in projects investigating the perception and production of speech by Mississippians of Anglo, African, and Hispanic heritages. She coedited the special issue of The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (with Irina Shport).
