The 17th International Symposium on Nonlinear Acoustics was held 18-22 July at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the campus of The Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania, USA. The scope of the symposium covered nonlinear acoustic phenomena in solids, liquids and gases. Sessions devoted to special topics and consisting of invited and con- tributed papers included Nonclassical Nonlinear Acoustics of Solids and NDE Applications, Elastic Wave Effects on Fluids in Porous Media, the Science and Application of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, Shock Wave Therapy, Infrasound, Harmonic Imaging in Diagnostic Ultrasound, and Thermoacoustics. General sessions consisting of contributed papers includ- ed Sound Beams, Resonators and Streaming, Bubbles, Particles, and Flows, Propagation, Shocks and Noise, Nonlinear Acoustics in Solids, and Nonlinear Acoustics in Medicine and Biology.
In addition, ISNA17 included the International Sonic Boom Forum (ISBF). This set of special sessions encapsulated increasing international interest in building and operating small supersonic jets with low-amplitude, shaped boom signatures, and timing of the ISBF occurred when many research programs were beginning to address the technical feasibility and design for such aircraft. The purpose of holding the ISBF was to foster technical communication and exchange between university, industry, and government scientists, engineers, and executives interested in sonic booms.
