David Mann is President of Loggerhead
Instruments and an Associate Professor
of Biological Oceanography at the
University of South Florida (USF). He
earned a Bachelor's of Science in
Neurobiology and Behavior from
Cornell University in 1988. Following
positions as a research technician at a
biotechnology company and the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
he headed away from the molecular
biology bench to earn his Ph.D. from
the Joint Program in Biological
Oceanography at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1995 with Phil Lobel. He became extremely interested in bioacoustics when studying sound production of damselfish at Johnston Atoll near Hawaii. Post-graduate work at the University of Maryland with
Arthur Popper focused on hearing by various fishes, including ultrasound detection by fish. Following his post- doc, he took a position at Tucker-Davis Technologies (TDT) in Gainesville, Florida where he eventually became Vice-President. While at TDT, he worked as an adjunct at Mote Marine Laboratory with his academic grandfa- ther, William Tavolga, on hearing in fishes. He joined USF in 2001 as an Assistant Professor where his laboratory studied bioacoustics and hearing in
marine animals including fishes, dolphins, manatees, and sea turtles. Dr. Mann is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. He founded Loggerhead Instruments in 2002, where he is currently developing open source hardware animal motion tags based on the Arduino platform.
