Dr. Beranek’s vast publications record includes the books Acoustical Measurements, Acoustics, Noise Reduction, Noise and Vibration Control, Music, Acoustics and Architecture, and Concert Halls and Opera Houses.
Dr. Beranek has served in many leadership positions in the Acoustical Society of America (ASA). He was the recipient of the ASA’s Gold Medal in 1974 and Honorary Fellowship in 1994. ASA member receives Chinese government award
Likun Zhang has been granted the 2011 Chinese Government Award for outstanding self-financed students abroad by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). This award was found- ed by the Chinese government in 2003 with the purpose of rewarding the aca- demic excellence of self-financed Chinese students studying overseas. Only those with outstanding perform- ance in their Ph.D. studies are consid- ered by the award selection panel. Likun obtained his Ph.D. degree in
Physics from Washington State University on May 2012, concentrating on acoustics and fluid physics. Likun's Ph.D. mentors, Prof. Philip L. Marston and Dr. David B. Thiessen, received the sincere gratitude from CSC for their full support and conscientious supervi- sion, which have contributed to Likun's academic achievements.
Call for Nominations: 2013 Safe-in- Sound Excellence in Hearing Loss Prevention AwardsTM
The Safe-in-Sound Excellence in Hearing Loss Prevention AwardsTM were established by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with the National Hearing Conservation Association to honor excellent hearing loss prevention practices in the work environment. Applicants are evaluated against key performance indicators in a review process designed to evaluate hearing loss prevention programs in each of three work sectors; construc- tion, manufacturing and services. In addition, a fourth award for Innovation in Hearing Loss Prevention recognizes individuals and/or business entity, regardless of industrial sector.
The awards recognize those who demonstrate, by example, the benefits
of developing or following good hear- ing loss prevention practices. Those selected will be recognized for their role in improving working conditions in the United States. In addition:
• A representative of the selected enterprises/organizations will be invited to the Annual Conference of the National Hearing Conservation Association, where they present their award winning stories.
• Examples of award-winning hearing loss prevention strate- gies will be presented on the NHCA and Safe-in-Sound websites.
The deadline for self-nominations is September 3, 2012. The 2012 awards will be presented on February 22, 2013 at the NHCA Annual Conference in St. Petersburg, FL. Additional informa- tion is available at www.safeinsound.us or send your questions to info@safein- sound.us.
